What Is a H2S Sensor?
The H2S sensor can detect low levels of hydrogen sulfide at ppm levels (parts per million). The most common technology used for H2S sensors is electrochemical cells. The electrochemical H2S gas sensor is a low-cost, small, replaceable component for complete stationary gas detection systems that operates over a wide range of temperature and humidity, has fast response times, and can be used as a diffusion detector to alert personnel.
An H2S Sensor generates a current output equivalent to the PPM level of hydrogen sulfide that diffuses into the sensor through a hydrophobic membrane. The hydrogen sulfide gas sensor hydrophobic membrane allows gas to permeate through to the sensor electrolyte, while protecting the sensor from liquids. The current output of an hydrogen sulfide Sensor is typically connected to a transmitter or controller that is part of the overall gas detection system, where the current output is displayed as a real time value of hydrogen sulfide that the H2S Sensor has detected.
An H2S Gas Sensor used in a fixed gas detection system is a consumable component and requires zero and span calibration and periodic replacement after several years of continuous use. An hydrogen sulfide gas Sensor can also be ranged for different levels of H2S detection, such as 0-50 ppm up to 0-5000 ppm. Typical replacement of a fixed gas detection system hydrogen sulfide Sensor is normally done by unplugging an old sensor from a detector head and plugging in a new sensor. H2S Sensors are sometimes “Smart,” having digital data in an on board circuit, which when connected to a gas detection transmitter is automatically uploaded into the transmitter for ease of use and continuous, maintenance-free operation.
The common elements used to complete an H2S gas Sensor Fixed Gas Detection System are the hydrogen sulfide sensor, detector, transmitter, controller, PLC, DCS and annunciation in the form of audible and visual alarms. An H2S Meter used for personnel safety monitoring of ambient areas includes PLC or DCS system alarm annunciation. It may also have audible and visual alarm device local annunciation to alert personnel in an area that the level of H2S detected by the hydrogen sulfide Sensor are above hazardous levels.
